Traveling solo allows you to challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone, but it can be hard to figure out where to go. Luckily, we talked with three travel experts and did our own research to find the 50 best places to travel solo!
Traveling solo can be the ultimate retreat. You can wake up and venture out as early or late as you see fit, you can dine at the restaurants of your choice and can decide on which attractions and adventures are on your agenda. We talked with Benjamin Liong Setiawan, aka “Hungry Editor”, a travel and lifestyle expert who shares some of his favorite places to visit in Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Costa Rica and more. Matthew Kepnes, aka “Nomadic Matt” also shared his best travel tips. And Kate McCulley, aka “Adventurous Kate” let us in on her favorite off-the-beaten-path solo vacation locations.
While Australia isn’t somewhere you typically plan on a whim, it’s so worth it. “If Australia were easy and cheap to fly halfway around the world, I would go all the time!” says Kate. “Australia is endlessly interesting. The wildlife is one-of-a-kind. The nature is bonkers. And the cities are just different enough that you feel slightly off-kilter—in the best way.”
Austria is one of the safest and most beautiful countries in Europe to travel to solo. If you can, visit Vienna, Graz, Salzburg and Insbruck. “Vienna is the gateway to much of central Europe; Graz and Linz hold historic old towns and funky cafes; and Salzburg is picturesque Baroque city close to mountains and lakes,” says Matt. The mountainsides are breathtaking, and you can hike in the summer or ski in the winter.
Ben highly suggests visiting the Bahamas as a solo traveler: “I love the Ocean Club on Paradise Island. It’s removed from all of the water parks and cruise ships. There are tranquil gardens on the property and definitely grab a Vesper, James Bond’s drink of choice, at the bar because Casino Royale was filmed here.”
