Britney Spears’ father, Jamie, has officially stepped down from his role as Britney’s conservator this past weekend. This ends an 11 year run of Britney not having full control over her own medical treatment in regards to her mental health.
Jamie Spears was appointed as Britney’s conservator back in 2008 after the pop superstar endured a nervous breakdown which involved the refusal to give up custody of her two children to seek proper treatment. With the title of conservator, Jamie was given the power to “restrict Britney’s visitors, with the exception of her court-appointed attorney Samuel Ingham. He also had the power to communicate with his daughter’s doctors and had access to all medical records regarding her treatment and diagnosis; as well as the ability to retain caretakers and security guards around the clock,” according to the BBC’s coverage of the pop stars recent conflicts with her father.
Jamie Spears himself filed for this motion, stating he needs to focus more on his own health. Jamie has been suffering from general sickness ever since his colon ruptured one year ago, which prompted Britney to check herself into a mental facility due to the familial stress. However, fans weren’t so convinced. When Britney very suddenly cancelled the rest of her Las Vegas residency due to these issues, fans we’re automatically concerned. Britney has gained the support of the world following her very public breakdown 10 years ago, so when Britney said she “checked herself” into a facility a few months back, fans weren’t so convinced knowing that her dad (at the time) still held full conservatorship over the pop star.
Thus, an online movement was created known as “Free Britney,” in which fans took to social media to raise awareness and try to find a way to release the pop star from her father’s control, and the institution they were convinced she was being held against her will. Spears herself shut down these rumors shortly after the movement went viral with an Instagram video, in which she stated “all is well, I’ll be back very soon! My family has been going through a lot of stress and anxiety recently, so I just needed time to deal. I am trying to take a moment for myself, but everything that’s happening is just making it harder for me. You may not know this about me, but I am strong, and stand up for what I want! Your love and dedication is amazing, but what I need right now is a little bit of privacy to deal with all the hard things that life is throwing my way.”
The decision for Jamie to remove his conservatorship is seemingly a temporary move, according to the official court documents, and the father seems to believe that once his own health improves he’ll take the title back on, however, fans aren’t so convinced since this new improvement occurred right after an incident between Jamie and his grandson.
Last week Kevin Federline, Britney’s ex-husband and father of their two sons Sean and Jayden, filed a restraining order against Jamie on behalf of the two boys. The order was placed after a physical altercation between Jamie and his grandson Sean, Federline claimed Spears broke down a door to get to his grandson and grabbed him once he was in the room, according to his attorney. The order includes a geographic restraint, meaning Jamie can’t be anywhere near the boys including in their home and at school or any other public space.
So with Federline still on Britney’s side, and an ongoing child abuse charge going against Jamie, it only makes sense that his conservatorship be revoked, whether it truly was due to Jamie’s reasoning or not. Either way, fans all around the world have breathed a sigh of relief for their beloved pop princess, and are hoping that in the long run this is best for her and her family.
