Apple Introduces Real-Time Translation Across Messages, Calls, and FaceTime

Apple unveiled a series of sweeping updates across its software ecosystem at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, alongside a bold expansion of its artificial intelligence suite, Apple Intelligence. Among the most striking announcements was the introduction of Live Translation, an on-device AI-powered feature that enables seamless, real-time translation across Messages, phone calls, and FaceTime.

During the event’s keynote, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, framed the updates as part of a broader mission to embed intelligence into the everyday user experience without compromising user privacy.

“Last year, we took the first steps on a journey to bring users intelligence that’s helpful, relevant, easy to use, and right where users need it, all while protecting their privacy. Now, the models that power Apple Intelligence are becoming more capable and efficient, and we’re integrating features in even more places across each of our operating systems.”

Apple’s new Live Translation feature represents a significant advancement in how users can communicate across language barriers. In Messages, it can translate text in real-time as it’s typed and deliver replies in the recipient’s language. Phone conversations benefit from spoken translations that play during the call, while FaceTime users will see translated captions appear live on their screens.

Notably, all translations are processed entirely on the user’s device using Apple’s proprietary language models. This local processing ensures that conversations remain private and are not uploaded to the cloud, a key distinction that aligns with Apple’s ongoing emphasis on privacy.

The feature is limited to devices equipped to handle these powerful models. Specifically, Live Translation will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and later models, as well as iPads and Macs featuring Apple Silicon, starting with the M1 chip.

Apple Intelligence already supports a solid lineup of languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese. That list is now growing. By the end of the year, Apple plans to roll out support for eight new languages: Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, European Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish, Traditional Chinese, and Vietnamese.

Google Announces New AI Email Tool To Make Sorting, Responding, And Deleting Messages Easier

Artificial intelligence is slowly taking over every sector of technology and the world. AI is often used to make life on the internet easier, and now, Google is tackling an issue many of us face in our daily online lives; organizing our emails. 

Demis Hassabis is the head of Google DeepMind, an artificial intelligence research lab that focuses on developing new and innovative AI tools, solutions, and technologies for users. Hassabis recently spoke at the SXSW London festival, a six-day event that brings together hundreds of major figures in the digital world. From music to film to technology as a whole, the event covers the successes of the industries and what’s to come in the future.

At this year’s SXSW London festival, AI was a major focus, as it’s being integrated throughout multiple sectors of the world’s biggest industries, and will only continue to be more present. 

Speaking at the event, Hassabis revealed that him and his team are working on a “next generation email” platform that’s meant to help users sort through their inbox, reply to the most important messages, and ensure they’re not wasting their time sorting through spam.

While speaking, Hassabis emphasized the role of AI in our society and the massive potential for growth in the future. He stated how he can see AI being used to cure diseases, solve the climate crisis, and bring peace to many parts of the world in the future, but for now, it’s being utilized to make parts of our day-to-day lives easier.

“The thing I really want – and we’re working on – is can we have a next-generation email. I would love to get rid of my email. I would pay thousands of dollars per month to get rid of that.”

Hassabis plans to create “something that would just understand what are the bread-and-butter emails, and answer in your style – and maybe make some of the easier decisions.”

Hassabis went on to discuss how he can see AI being used for protection against certain algorithms that are designed to drain tech users’ attention away from more important tasks.

“I’m very excited about the idea of a universal AI assistant that knows you really well, enriches your life by maybe giving you amazing recommendations, and helps to take care of mundane chores for you,” he said.

“[It] basically gives you more time and maybe protects your attention from other algorithms trying to gain your attention. I think we can actually use AI in service of the individual.”

When discussing the future of AI development generally, Hassabis stated that he was shocked to see how quickly artificial general intelligence (AGI) is being advanced in big tech spaces. AGI is a more human-like cognition version of AI that can work on a large amount of tasks. 

Since AGI is more advanced, Hassabis has called out major companies, as well as both the US and China to be collaborative when it comes to AGI. 

“I hope at least on the scientific level and a safety level we can find some common ground, because in the end it’s for the good of all of humanity. It’s going to affect the whole of humanity,” he said, predicting that AGI is likely to become more present in the next five to 20 years. 

“That is very short if you think about how momentous a moment that will be,” he stated. 

“I think it’ll be nothing short of a new Industrial Revolution, effectively. For something this fundamental, I think it’s important to try to have as much foresight ahead of time as you can.”

Modern Alchemy: CERN Physicists Successfully Transform Lead Into Gold Using Particle Collider

Ancient alchemists dreamed of transforming lead into gold through a mystical process they called “chrysophobia,” believing they could harness an elusive “philosopher’s stone.” Centuries later, modern science at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) near Geneva, Switzerland, has shown this feat is indeed possible, using particle physics instead of magic.

Recent experiments at the LHC have demonstrated that gold can be created by smashing lead atoms together at incredible speeds—specifically, 99.999993% the speed of light. Between 2015 and 2018, during the collider’s second operational phase, scientists successfully produced around 86 billion gold nuclei. The total yield was still minuscule, equating to merely 29 trillionths of a gram.

These fleeting gold particles existed momentarily before smashing with the collider’s beam pipe and breaking apart. However, even their extremely brief lifespan didn’t escape detection. Marco van Leeuwen, spokesperson for A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) collaboration, explained the ephemeral creations prove the feasibility of further studies.

“It is impressive to see that our detectors can handle head-on collisions producing thousands of particles while also being sensitive to collisions where only a few particles are produced at a time, enabling the study of rare electromagnetic ‘nuclear transmutation’ processes.”

Historical alchemists weren’t entirely misguided. Inspired by Aristotelian ideas, they observed similarities between gold and lead, believing the heavier metal was simply an “ailing” form of the more precious one.

In reality, gold and lead are neighbors on the periodic table, separated by just three protons. Gold has 79 protons, whereas lead has 82. Modern physics can exploit this proximity by stripping three protons from lead nuclei (alongside some neutrons) to form gold. Further reducing protons results in different metals such as mercury or thallium.

To precisely measure the particles generated inside the collider, physicists utilized ALICE’s sophisticated Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs). These sensitive devices track neutrons and protons ejected from billions of high-speed particle interactions each second.

The third and current run of the LHC has proven even more productive, reaching an impressive rate of approximately 89,000 gold nuclei per second—almost double the rate of earlier runs, thanks to increased collision energies.

“This is the first systematic experimental detection and analysis of gold production at the LHC, thanks to ALICE’s specialized ZDC instrumentation,” said Uliana Dmitrieva, a physicist involved in the project.

Although Run 3 has created nearly twice as much gold as Run 2 due to ongoing improvements to the machines, the total still comes to trillions of times less than what would be needed to make a piece of jewelry.

“While the dream of medieval alchemists has technically come true, their hopes of riches have once again been dashed,” CERN stated.

Physicist John Jowett, who was also involved in the experiment, stated that beyond the alchemical novelty, these findings enhance scientists’ understanding of electromagnetic processes, providing practical insights.

“The results also test and improve theoretical models of electromagnetic dissociation which, beyond their intrinsic physics interest, are used to understand and predict beam losses that are a major limit on the performance of the LHC and future colliders.”

According to Jiangyong Jia, a physicist at Stony Brook University in New York, lead was detected turning into gold between 2002 and 2004 at another CERN accelerator known as the SPS. However, the most recent tests are at higher energy, have a far better chance of producing gold, and provide far cleaner observations.

Although they have no plans to pursue gold mining as a side business, CERN researchers claim that a greater knowledge of how photons can alter nuclei will enable them to enhance the performance of the LHC. “Understanding such processes is crucial for controlling beam quality and stability,” says Jia.

Their relationship reignited, Jason and Lucia waste no time diving back into a flurry of criminal activities. Two Studies Show Progress In Stem Cell Treatment For Parkinson’s Disease 

Individuals living with Parkinson’s disease may be able to find treatment from stem-cell transplants.

Two teams of researchers found that when stem cells are transplanted into the brains of individuals with Parkinson’s, the patients began to produce the chemical messenger dopamine and some symptoms were eased. The research was recently reported in the journal Nature.

“The results indicate that “now we have the potential to really, really halt this disease in its tracks,” says Dr. Mya Schiess, a neurology professor at UTHealth Houston.

The Food and Drug Administrations so far has cleared one of the stem-cell treatments for a Phase 3 study, which is the final step before receiving approval. 

NPR reports that around 1 million people in the US are living with Parkinson’s. The disease impacts the brain and attacks the neurons that create dopamine, and once those neurons die, patients will experience a variety of disabling symptoms like tremors, fatigue, difficulty walking, and general cognitive issues. 

One of the studies involved 12 people in the US and Canada who have the disease. Using a high dose of a stem-cell product from BlueRock Therapeutics, a subsidiary of Bayer, surgeons administered either a low or high dose to the participants. 

“The idea is to place these neuron progenitors right where you need them to connect with other neurons in the brain,” says Dr. Viviane Tabar, a stem-cell scientist and chair of neurosurgery.

After 18 months, PET scans showed that the transplanted cells were producing dopamine. “For a typical Parkinson’s patient, you would expect every year to get two to three points worse,” says Dr. Lorenz Studer, who directs the Center for Stem Cell Biology at the Sloan Kettering Institute in New York and is a scientific adviser to BlueRock.

“The high dose group got about 20 points better.”

The low-dose group didn’t benefit as much, but they still showed improvement. 

The second study was performed by researchers in Japan. The team induced pluripotent stem cells, derived from the patient’s own cells. Seven patients had their cells injected into both sides of their brains, and were shown to produce dopamine. 

Dr. Studer said that this is a remarkable moment for medicine: “For us, it’s quite an exciting time finally seeing some of the fruit of our work.”

“One reason it’s taken so long, is that stem cells have the potential to become so many different kinds of cells. It takes just the right mix of chemicals at just the right time to produce a neuron that makes dopamine,” he says.

“It took us nearly 10 years to figure out the recipe, how to make specifically those dopamine cells. It took us another 10 years to have the product that we would dare to put into patients.”

These studies are the first steps towards what could be a tangible treatment to help patients who are suffering from this disease.

Scientists Utilize AI To More Easily Diagnose Celiac Disease 

Cambridge scientists have developed a machine learning algorithm using artificial intelligence (AI) to help determine if an individual has celiac disease, which was previously a long-term process to get a proper diagnosis. 

The algorithm was able to correctly identify the presence of the disease in 97 out of 100 biopsies from a pool of 3,400 scanned samples from four NHS hospitals, according to reports. This is a major development for pathologists, as the tool can be used to not only speed up results, but improve overall techniques for other potential diseases as well. 

Pathologists are also in high demand, so having a tool that can help take the pressure off of their intense workload will make identifying disease more accessible for patients. The basis of this research comes from studies focused on detecting cancer in the body, but scientists realized the tools can be used for other diseases as well.

Scientists at the University of Cambridge decided to utilize the tools to focus on celiac disease, an autoimmune disease that is triggered by the consumption of gluten. Symptoms of the disease vary widely between individuals, making it difficult for many patients to receive an accurate diagnosis. 

In order to diagnose celiacs, pathologists need to look at a biopsy from part of the small intestine under a microscope. Interpreting these biopsies, however, can be subjective, hence how difficult it is to diagnose.

The researchers for Cambridge developed the machine learning algorithm in order to classify biopsy image data. Senior author Professor Elizabeth Soilleux from the Department of Pathology and Churchill College, University of Cambridge, said:

“Celiac disease affects as many as one in 100 people and can cause serious illness, but getting a diagnosis is not straightforward.”

“It can take many years to receive an accurate diagnosis, and at a time of intense pressures on health care systems, these delays are likely to continue. AI has the potential to speed up this process, allowing patients to receive a diagnosis faster, while at the same time taking pressure off NHS waiting lists,” Professor Soilleuz stated.

The team tested the algorithm using 650 images from an independent data set, and found that the model was correct in its diagnosis in over 97 out of 100 cases. 

The group also emphasized that this is a great step in advancement for the world of pathology, because previous data sets have shown that pathologists can, and have, disagree on a diagnosis. Dr. Florian Jaeckle, from the Department of Pathology, and a Research Fellow at Hughes Hall, Cambridge, said, “This is the first time AI has been shown to diagnose as accurately as an experienced pathologist whether an individual has celiac or not.

“Because we trained it on data sets generated under a number of different conditions, we know that it should be able to work in a wide range of settings, where biopsies are processed and imaged differently.

“This is an important step towards speeding up diagnoses and freeing up pathologists’ time to focus on more complex or urgent cases. Our next step is to test the algorithm in a much larger clinical sample, putting us in a position to share this device with the regulator, bringing us nearer to this tool being used in the NHS.”

“When we speak to patients, they are generally very receptive to the use of AI for diagnosing celiac disease,” Dr. Jaeckle said. 

“This no doubt partly reflects their experiences of the difficulties and delays in receiving a diagnosis.

One issue that comes up frequently with both patients and clinicians is the issue of ‘explainability’—being able to understand and explain how AI reaches its diagnosis. It’s important for us as researchers and for regulators to bear this in mind if we want to ensure there is public trust in applications of AI in medicine.”

“During the diagnostic process, it’s vital that patients keep gluten in their diet to ensure that the diagnosis is accurate. But this can cause uncomfortable symptoms. That’s why it’s really important that they are able to receive an accurate diagnosis as quickly as possible,” said Keira Shepherd, Research Officer at Celiac UK.

“This research demonstrates one potential way to speed up part of the diagnosis journey … we hope that one day this technology will be used to help patients receive a quick and accurate diagnosis.”

Microsoft To Shut Down Skype After 21-Years Of Service 

This week, Microsoft announced that calling, video conferencing, and messaging service Skype will shut down on May 5th after 21-years of service. Microsoft is urging current Skype users to move to their other platform, Teams. 

Skype was known as one of the first services that allowed people to call each other without paying a phone company. In today’s modern world, there are a multitude of ways for people to video chat with one another, so the company has become rather obsolete.

“We’ve learned a lot from Skype over the years that we’ve put into Teams as we’ve evolved teams over the last seven to eight years,” Jeff Teper, president of Microsoft 365 collaborative apps and platforms, said to CNBC

“But we felt like now is the time because we can be simpler for the market, for our customer base, and we can deliver more innovation faster just by being focused on Teams.”

Microsoft said that current Skype users will be able to use their Skype credentials to log into, and use, Teams, and their contacts and chats will also be transferred over. Users will be able to export their Skype data. 

“This is obviously a big, big moment for us, and we’re certainly very grateful in many ways,” Teper said.

In 2023, Microsoft stated that Skype had around 36 million daily active users, a 40 million decrease from March 2020. 

“I think a good write-up of the history of the thing would mark the shift to mobile and cloud as a significant change in the communications category,” Teper said.

Elon Musk To Withdraw $100 Billion Bid For OpenAI If It Remains A Nonprofit 

Elon Musk stated that he will likely drop his bid to purchase OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, if it maintains its current structure operating as a nonprofit. 

Musk initially announced on Monday that he was leading a group of investors offering to buy OpenAi for $97.4 billion, according to CNN. Just two days later the tech CEO announced he was planning on withdrawing his bid if the company decides to maintain their founding mission.

“If OpenAI, Inc.’s Board is prepared to preserve the charity’s mission and stipulate to take the for sale’ sign off its assets by halting its conversion, Musk will withdraw the bid,” Musk said in a court filing. 

“Otherwise, the charity must be compensated by what an arm’s-length buyer will pay for its assets.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has not fully rejected Musk’s bid and stipulations, but he did question the rationale, accusing him of hypocrisy. 

“In this Court, Musk argues that OpenAI, Inc.’s assets cannot be ‘transferred away’ for ‘private gain,’ OpenAI said in a legal filing. 

“But out of court, those constraints evidently do not apply, so long as Musk and his allies are the buyers. Musk would have OpenAI, Inc. transfer all of its assets to him, for his economic benefit and that of his competing AI business and hand-picked private investors.”

“The independent Board’s sole fiduciary duty is to the mission of ensuring AGI benefits all of humanity. Respectfully, it is not up to a competitor to decide what is in the best interests of OpenAI’s mission,” said Andrew Nussbaum, counsel for the OpenAI Board at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

OpenAI is operated by a nonprofit organization that controls a for-profit company called OpenAI LP. The for-profit company worked to get OpenAI valued at around $100 billion within just a few years. 

Musk has filed multiple legal complaints against both OpenAI and Altman over claims that the company and the executives have misrepresented their work as philanthropic. 

“OpenAI has gotten this far while having at least dual nonprofit/for-profit role. What they’re trying to do now is completely delete the nonprofit. And that seems really going too far,” Musk said

“This is analogous to if you fund a nonprofit to preserve the Amazon rainforest but instead they turn it into a lumber company and chop down trees and sell them for wood, you’d be like: ‘Wait a second, that’s the exact opposite of what I donated the money for.’”

Google Maps To Rename Gulf Of Mexico As Gulf Of America In The US 

Google has officially confirmed that it will be renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on Google Maps in the US. This move comes after an executive order from Donald Trump. 

It will remain the Gulf of Mexico in Mexico, and for Google Maps users outside of the US and Mexico, they will see both names on the app. The executive order also will make it so the Alaskan peak Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, will be changed to Mount McKinley in the US. 

“We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government,” said Google in a post.

“When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names. That applies here too.”

“As directed by the president, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America and North America’s highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley,” the interior department said in a statement.

Google stated that it would be updating its Maps service once the names were officially updated in the US government’s geographic names information system, according to reports.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum responded to this order by jokingly stating that North America as a whole should be renamed either “América Mexicana”, or “Mexican America.” These names are in reference to a founding 1814 document that preceded Mexico’s constitution and used those names. 

Trump stated that the name change was an “appropriate” decision.

“It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country,” he said.

Apple Suspends AI Generated News Alerts After Complaints Of Misleading Headline Errors

Apple has officially suspended a new artificial intelligence feature on its devices that was meant to summarize news headlines. The suspension comes after new outlets criticized and complained about multiple errors that made the summaries misleading and nearly completely false. 

A spokesperson for Apple said that the company was “working on improvements and will make them available in a future software update.”

The BBC reported that the journalism body Reporters Without Borders stated these errors are a prime example of major tech companies rushing to roll out new innovative features and how dangerous that can be. 

“Innovation must never come at the expense of the right of citizens to receive reliable information. This feature should not be rolled out again until there is zero risk it will publish inaccurate headlines,” RSF’s Vincent Berthier said.

The BBC itself was one of the major outlets to make a complaint after the AI feature made a headline falsely telling readers that the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione, had shot himself. 

According to the BBC’s report, the feature also put out inaccurate headlines from Sky News, The New York Times, and the Washington Post.

“There is a huge imperative [for tech firms] to be the first one to release new features,” said Jonathan Bright, head of AI for public services at the Alan Turing Institute.

Apple has disabled the feature for news and entertainment apps a month after initial complaints were made. 

“With the latest beta software releases of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, Notification summaries for the News & Entertainment category will be temporarily unavailable,” an Apple spokesperson said.

“We’re pleased that Apple has listened to our concerns and is pausing the summarization feature for news,” a BBC spokesperson said.

“We look forward to working with them constructively on next steps. Our priority is the accuracy of the news we deliver to audiences which is essential to building and maintaining trust.”
