The 2025 annual meeting at the European Society of Cardiology had doctors, scientists, and researchers presenting new findings on ways to tackle heart conditions, many of which are being considered major “gamechangers.”
The 2025 annual meeting at the European Society of Cardiology, the world’s largest heart conference, had doctors, scientists, and researchers present “gamechanger” new findings on tackling multiple heart conditions.
The event, held in Madrid, was attended by 33,000 health professionals from 169 countries. Over 1,100 sessions featured major research, new guidelines, and groundbreaking trials.
Those who attended are referring to these new findings as “gamechangers” for the future of heart medicine, Professor Felix Mahfoud, the chair of the ESC communications committee, stated that this year’s conference marks a huge “turning point” in the medical world.
“This year’s ESC congress marks a turning point: cardiology has never been more dynamic, interdisciplinary, and patient-centered,” Mahfoud said.
“Never before have we seen such a high number of late-breaking trials from across all fields of cardiology presented and simultaneously published in top journals, informing clinical decision-making and improving patient care.”
One of the advancements presented was a new pill for patients with high blood pressure who are resistant to existing medication. The doctors in Madrid hailed this new medication as a “triumph of science, as 1.3 billion people worldwide suffer from hypertension. In half of those cases, their high blood pressure is uncontrolled or resistant to treatment,” according to reports.
Baxdrostat is a new drug that can significantly lower blood pressure in individuals whose levels remain dangerously high despite taking many medications. The results of the BaxHTN study regarding baxdrostat showed that after 12 weeks, patients saw their blood pressure fall by around 9-10 mmHg (millimeters of mercury, the unit of measurement of blood pressure).
Andrew Gregory, a health editor in Madrid for the Guardian, wrote that there were also exciting discoveries regarding existing drugs to help heart patients.
A new analysis of seven clinical trials showed patients taking clopidogrel had a 14% lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events compared to those taking aspirin.
“Eating foods rich in potassium, such as avocados, bananas and spinach, could reduce your risk of heart conditions, hospitalization and death by 24%,” Danish researchers told the conference.
“Pulses, fish, nuts and seeds are also good sources of potassium,” experts said.
Doctors also discussed how artificial intelligence is helping advance the medical field, specifically the tools that they use. A team at Imperial College London and Imperial College healthcare NHS trust have designed an AI-led stethoscope that can detect three heart conditions in 15 seconds.
Gregory wrote that the stethoscope analyzes small differences in heartbeat and blood flow that is undetectable to the human ear, and therefore wouldn’t be picked up on a traditional stethoscope. The tool also takes a rapid ECG at the same time.
“The artificial intelligence-led stethoscope’s AI capabilities mean it can spot heart failure, heart valve disease and abnormal heart rhythms almost instantly.”
The AI stethoscope creates space for early diagnosis, which in terms of heart health is extremely important. Delegates at the conference were told that the AI scanning system is already helping stroke patients avoid serious disability, and tripling the rate of recovery.
Another new AI tool called ESC Chat is helping cardiologists around the world. The chatbot service responds immediately to questions about clinical guidelines, which saves time and gives doctors access to proper recommendations, diagnostic criteria, and treatment options.
The conference also had discussions of ailments impacting children, specifically with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM), which is a typically genetic condition responsible for over 10% of sudden cardiac deaths in children.
According to research presented, doctors can now use a simple cheek-swab test to identify children with ACM five years before they would normally be diagnosed. Experts at Great Ormond Street hospital and City St George’s, University of London are also developing the two-minute test into swab kits that can be utilized at home.
There’s also been developments with vaccinations as an effective measure against specific infections and prevention of cardiovascular disease/events. Results presented at the conference showed that the shingles vaccine can lower the risk of heart attack or stroke by as much as 18%.
