Holistic physicians, like Dr. Norman Shealy, want to educate the public on the whole-body approach to healthcare that this sector of medicine accomplishes by combining conventional treatments with complementary and alternative medicine.
More people are turning to non-traditional means of treating their medical needs after realizing that conventional medicine only provides temporary solutions to their long-term ailments. The study of holistic medicine and biogenics works to treat the mind and spirit, in addition to the body, so that patients are focusing more on reaching an overall sense of wellness, as opposed to just fixing one problem at a time.
Biogenics provides a structured definition for what the base of holistic practices all work to accomplish. It’s defined as an all natural, self-regulating stress management protocol that gives patients the tools to handle the stress, anxiety, and mental weight of coping with physical issues like chronic pain. The goal of holistic medicine is simple, improving your overall health and wellness in every way.
Dr. Norman Shealy is known as the father of holistic medicine, as it’s something that he’s been practicing since 1971. When he first entered into the world of medicine, he was known as one of the world’s leading experts in pain, anxiety, depression, and chronic disease management, which back then, was quite rare to have a doctor who was so multifaceted in the ways they would approach treating patients and their pain.
“Pain is a part of the human experience, it could be chronic pain from a disease or injury, or the negativity of the everyday stressors that envelop our world. As we grow and live, painful feelings of anxiety, guilt and depression often become a part of who we are. It’s simply a part of this life and we will never entirely escape it, but we can learn to detach from it. Holistic approaches to treating pain and Biogenics is how we can do that.”
“Our mission at the Shealy-Sorin Wellness Institute is to help empower and touch the lives of millions. Promote true Holistic health care, share our scientific research and latest innovations to promote health and wellness. We are putting the HEAL back in HEALthcare!”
Dr. Shealy finished medical school by the time he was 19, and claims that from that young age he always knew he wanted to help people heal. After training in neurosurgery for five years, he knew he wanted to mainly help people alleviate the chronic pains they were dealing with, but couldn’t find a proper solution for.
“I’ve been working hard for decades to find another way to help patients manage their pain in a truly effective way that doesn’t require highly addictive medications. So I utilized my background in neurosurgery to create transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and spinal cord stimulation, in the mid 1960’s,” Shealy explained.
“I came up with the idea of spinal cord stimulation, which works as a sort of pacemaker for your spine. Over the years following those innovations, I was seeing up to 400 patients a year who were at their wits end with conventional medicine and wanted to try the stimulation techniques to help treat their chronic back pain. Mind you most of these patients have had between 5 to 7 unsuccessful back operations to treat that pain, and were also taking heavy prescription medication to continue to treat that pain.”
Based on all the demand he was receiving in 1971, Shealy founded the Shealy Pain & Rehabilitation Center, which was the first of its kind for treating pain using holistic pain management techniques that worked to retrain the nervous system in those who have been failed by conventional medicine. “I began bringing in the patients that I was initially treating and we would start by weaning them off of the prescription medication they were on and replacing it with things like acupuncture, electrical stimulation, and other non-traditional techniques.”
After the first year, Shealy completed his Humanistic Psychology PhD in Holistic self-regulation and stress management, which directly led to his development of biogenics. Fast forward a few decades to April 2015, Shealy was giving a presentation and Holistic Health workshop in Kansas City, MO, on Binaural Beats and pain management, where he met Dr. Sorin. Sorin would soon after join Shealy to open the Shealy-Sorin Wellness Institute.
According to their website, “Dr. Sorin works with Dr. Shealy as the Medical Director of the Shealy-Sorin Wellness Institute, offering truly holistic healthcare by clinical appointments in person and telemedicine, holding workshops, holistic health training, as well as giving talks and presentations in addition to clinical work & research.”
“With over 70 years of combined experience of true holistic healthcare, the Shealy-Sorin Wellness Institute strives to provide the highest standard available in educational materials, instruction, guidance, and wellness products to achieve successful outcomes where conventional medicine has failed.”
Shealy went on to explain that by the late 70’s the world began opening their minds to the idea of holistic medicine, as a lot of individuals were finding that it was working to treat more than just physical ailments.
“My medical philosophy has always been conventional medicine is good for acute illness, but horrible for chronic illness. Chronic illness requires a more intense approach in which the doctor needs to get all the information on the individual’s physical and mental state of being, because they’re both equally as important. This is where biogenics comes into play, because it focuses on wellness, not just health.”
“Fear is a powerful thing, and is one of the biggest causes of anxiety and depression. When one is suffering from a medical issue of any kind, fear is often the initial response, so what we do is use these biogenic models to help detach our patients from that fear, and have them focus on alleviating their pain. Once they also see that our practice offers approaches that aren’t invasive, or requiring heavy medications and intense risky surgeries, they feel that sense of care and security that they’re in a safe space.
“Because we have such an aversion to heavy and addictive prescription medications at the Shealy-Sorin Wellness Institute, our practice has a huge emphasis on the importance of taking proper natural supplements; which is also why we have a retail aspect of our practice as well.”
“For example, Magnesium is one of the most important nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy, as it assists in processes like regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, making protein, bone, and DNA. This is why I initially developed the Magnesium lotion, which I created because the average individual doesn’t realize that the best way to take in magnesium is externally, not through a traditional vitamin supplement. That type of education that comes with the product is the reason we began selling oils and supplements, so that more people would take the time to learn about the best ways to take care of themselves.”
Shealy explained how “education is so important not only for our practice but for holistic approaches to medicine in general. Less than 10% of Americans practice all of the essential health habits that we need to live a long and healthy life. These habits include a healthy diet, daily exercise, not-smoking, and sleep. Traditional medicine doesn’t take all of these aspects of a patient’s life into consideration when treating them. You go to a regular doctor with back pain, and they tell you to take a pill instead of asking what your sleeping habits are, what kind of meals you’re eating, and what your mental health is like, as these are all relative.
“Here at the Shealy-Sorin Wellness Institute, we value and practice a forthright honest approach. Our goal is to provide our patients to proactively treat and prevent disease, achieve and maintain wellness, increase vitality, to create optimal wellness for everyone we work with”
