Last week, individuals all over the world were shocked to learn of the death of former One Direction member and super star Liam Payne, who passed away after falling from the balcony of the third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires. For the past week, fans have been grieving and gathering together to honor Payne’s legacy.
Last week, Liam Payne passed away after falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel room in Buenos Aires. The singer and former One Direction member has since been honored by fellow pop culture icons and fans around the world who have hailed his impact in the music industry and beyond.
This past weekend specifically, people gathered outside of St Peter’s church in Wolverhampton, Payne’s hometown, with balloons, bouquets of flowers, and candles to pay tribute to the superstar. This is just one example of the reactions and vigils that took place around the world for Payne.
At Hyde Park in London, hundreds of fans organized and gathered to release balloons alongside the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens, according to reports from the Guardian.
One fan named Lauren stated: “It’s more comforting being with other people, because these people get it, whereas back at home, you’re just kind of on your own,” referring to the complicated and confusing feelings of grief for a public figure who you didn’t know personally, but who’s art had a major impact on your life.
“It’s quite tough, you’re stuck in your own thoughts, and here you can talk about it.”
Fans also came together to honor Payne in Munich, Paris, Glasgow, Madrid, Sydney, the Philippines, Colombia and New York City. Individuals who grew up with One Direction from their debut on X Factor revived their “directioner” (the One Direction fandom name) accounts to communicate with one another and organize vigils.
When the news first broke, hundreds of fans gathered around the Palermo area of the Argentinian capital. The Guardian reported a “quiet disbelief hung over the street.”
One Direction was a huge moment in pop culture. Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles may not have won X Factor in 2010, but they went on to become one of the biggest boy bands and household names last decade.
Each member went on to post their own emotional tribute messages online, and Malik announced last weekend that he would be postponing the US leg of his tour. He posted that he made the decision “given the heartbreaking loss experienced this week”.
“The dates are being rescheduled for January and I’ll post them as soon as it’s all set in the next few days. Your tickets will remain valid for the new dates. Love you all and thank you for your understanding.”
One Direction went on what was referred to as an “indefinite hiatus” back in 2016. Payne began his own solo career the following year and had many hit singles, including “Strip That Down,” “For You” with Rita Ora, and “Get Low” featuring Zedd.
During an interview with the Guardian in 2019, Payne discussed his journey with therapy and mental health struggles.
He discussed that at the height of One Direction’s fame, he began using alcohol and mood stabilizing drugs to counteract the “erratic highs and lows” that came from becoming so famous so quickly at such a young age.
“I just needed a little bit of help to keep me stable … it was very touch and go at times,” he said.
In 2017, Payne became a dad to his son Bear Grey Payne with his partner at the time Cheryl tweedy, who was also a judge on X Factor.
The world, the music industry, and fans from all over continue to mourn the loss of Payne, hoping he’s at some level of peace now.
