President Donald Trump has encouraged citizens of North Carolina to break the law and vote twice in the upcoming election.
Speaking to a North Carolina broadcaster, Trump suggested that those voting should first send in a postal vote, then cast their ballot in-person to test the system. The last few months has seen Trump repeatedly criticize the mail-in voting system and erroneously claim that mail in votes are more susceptible to mass electoral fraud.
Last month President Trump even admitted to sabotaging postal voting by vetoing plans to provide extra funds to the United States Postal Service.
“Let them send it in and let them go vote,” Trump said while appearing on the North Carolina broadcaster WECT-TV last week.
“And if the system is as good as they say it is then obviously they won’t be able to vote (in person).”
Trump has also taken to social media to advise people (in a Tweet now removed by Twitter) who vote by post to travel to the polling station ‘to see whether or not your mail-in vote has been tabulated’ and then vote in person if it is still necessary to do so.
“Based on the massive number of Unsolicited and Solicited Ballots that will be sent to potential Voters for the upcoming 2020 Election, & in order for you to MAKE SURE YOUR VOTE COUNTS AND IS COUNTED, SIGN & MAIL IN your Ballot as EARLY as possible. On Election Day, or Early Voting…” Trump tweeted last Wednesday.
North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein quickly responded to Trump’s comments, calling them outrageous before encouraging the public to make sure they voted, but only once.
“Yesterday, the president encouraged North Carolinians to vote both in person and by mail, supposedly to test our state’s election system,” Stein said in a statement released by the state.
“Let me be clear: every eligible North Carolinian should vote, but it is against the law to vote or attempt to vote twice. North Carolina’s election system is strong. It ensures that every eligible voter can vote easily, safely, securely and only once whether they choose to do so by mail or in person during our 17 days of early voting or on Election Day. Whichever method you choose to cast your ballot in our upcoming elections, please know that your vote will count and your voice will be heard, “As Attorney General I will do everything in my power to make sure the will of the people is fulfilled in November.
That’s why I’m currently suing the postmaster general and the US Postal Service to ensure that election mail is delivered and counted in a timely manner and why I filed a motion in this case early this morning for a preliminary injunction to repair the damage that has already been done to our postal delivery. I’ll continue to take whatever actions are necessary to make sure that the outcome of our election is legitimate and that North Carolinians can have full faith in our election results.”
Executive director of the North Carolina State Board Karen Brinson Bell wrote an open letter to voters to reassure them that there are multiple measures that will prevent anyone from having two votes registered.
Ms Bell said that someone who has voted by post would be shown up on the electronic pollbook and be prevented from voting in person and attempting to do so intentionally is a crime.
“The Democrats have abandoned the American people over the simple subject of politics. Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi are holding the American people hostage over money for their radical left wing agenda that the country doesn’t want and won’t accept. For example, they’ve asked for a ridiculous $3.5 billion, that’s billion, $3.5 billion for universal mail-in voting,” Trump said during a coronavirus press conference last month.
“Mail-in voting, a system riddled by fraud and corruption. You just look at what happened with the Carolyn Maloney race. They should do that race over, by the way. I think her opponent is right when he is having fits about that race.
“When you look at the ballot, the ballots that are missing and the ballot frauds, nobody knows what’s going on with that race and yet they declared her a winner. So I don’t know what’s happened over the last 24 hours, but her opponent is rightfully going a little bit crazy.
“They can’t do a little race with 20,000 people. Now, they want to take it countrywide mail-in voting. It’s going to be the greatest fraud in the history of elections. When you always talk Russia, Russia, Russia, China, Iran on voting, your biggest problem is going to be with the Democrats, not with China, Russia, and Iran,” Trump continued at the press conference, leading some to believe he was criticizing mail-in voting in order to decrease Democrat votes.
