For many of us, the three meals a day we need to be a fully functioning healthy human can become more of a chore than a joyous experience. Whether it be because of the food choices we can afford, the space we have to cook, or our attitude when it comes to making our meals, a multitude of factors can make food seem boring, and tedious.

Joanne Sakulich had this exact same feeling when the pandemic started in 2020. Joanne and her husband, Mark, come from the world of corporate America. After each worked a long day, they would often opt to go out to dinner to make their evening routines easier, and give themselves a chance to reconnect at the end of the day.

When the pandemic started, however, they had to adjust the ways in which they sustained themselves. Through this process, Joanne came to a realization, that many of us don’t know what we’re really putting into our bodies, and the basic building blocks of almost every meal can often go untouched and abandoned within our kitchen cupboards.

For this reason and many others, she started HS Creations, offering delicious herb and spice blends that are crafted with pure organic ingredients and no hidden additives, making them healthy and all-natural. “Our blends are a lifesaver for those who are short on space, time, and money, and we offer a variety of flavors to cater to every taste bud.”

“We understand that not everyone is a chef, and that’s why we’ve made it easy for anyone to enjoy gourmet flavors. We even use our blends on our everyday meals, including frozen ones, to add a touch of sophistication and flavor. We believe that gourmet flavor can brighten up anyone’s day and should be enjoyed by everyone!”

So how did Joanne go from the world of corporate America, working as an independent consultant, to dedicating herself to HS Creations?

“It was a little bit of a rude awakening. When I began learning how to cook, I would look at my pantry and become overwhelmed by the amount of spices I had, particularly because I didn’t remember when and why I bought all of them in the first place,” she said.

As someone who was informationally driven in her professional life, Joanne wanted to know all about the specific ingredients she would be using in her cooking. She began looking at the labels of all of her herbs and spices and was quickly surprised to learn just how complex their makeup actually was, considering they were meant to be the basic building blocks of a dish.

“I felt like I needed a chemistry degree to fully understand the things I was putting into my body. Even seeing something as simple as ‘natural spices’ on a label was odd to me because there was no actual information on what made them natural besides the fact that the company just decided to use that word.”

With this in mind, Joanne wanted to explore making things like dried basil and oregano on her own, so she would at least be more in control of what she would actually be using in her cooking. Her initial process involved using a counter space dehydrator to preserve organic thyme, oregano, and basil, “all of the basics.”

She enjoyed the process of dehydrating herbs, so she decided to take it a step further and make her own specialized organic blends to replace the many bottles that went untouched in her pantry. It was a natural progression of learning how to cook, to doing research on what was actually in the herbs and spices that many of us use in our day-to-day cooking, to then taking control over what she would be using.

Little did Joanne know that her newfound knowledge, interest, and skill when preparing herbs and spices would turn into a whole business.

“I was looking at all the various blends in my cabinet and thought, ‘Why can’t I do this on my own?’ So it just evolved from there. I began experimenting with making my own specialized blends and utilizing them in my cooking. The people I would give samples to would rave about the flavors; my main tester, of course, being my husband.”

Joanne can’t pinpoint an exact moment when she decided to take what started as a pandemic hobby into a full-fledged business, she eventually just knew that what she was doing was special and brought a level of joy back into cooking that she had never really had. She wanted to give that to others who may have lost their spark for creating in the kitchen, or those like herself who may have never had that spark to begin with.

“If something this simple can change someone’s diet and attitude regarding what they’re putting in their body, I wanted to help facilitate that. When it comes to flavor, don’t we all deserve a little bit better than the standard level of taste we’ve become accustomed to? I’m not a perfect person when it comes to a healthy diet and I’m not a gourmet chef, but I believe in flavor, and people deserve better.”

Everyday meals should be fantastic and enjoyable.

“I have a lot of friends who have various dietary restrictions such as being vegan, keto, gluten-free, etc., and all of them have complained about their meals in one way or the other. So to be able to touch every single type of diet by going back down to the basics of a meal, the flavor, I can bring that enjoyment back into the food that many of us view as simply fuel to get through the day. Food should be an experience and bring us comfort and happiness. That’s why I always say ‘I believe in flavor,’ because that’s what it does to a meal, there’s an emotional element,” Joanne stated.

When HS Creations was initially launched, they had around 10 blends, now they have about 60. At the beginning of this business venture, Joanne got the advice to just create a standard 10 blends and focus on building their market around those, however, her drive to create was only growing stronger, so she kept making more blends.

“I had this realization that everyone’s palette is different. Everyone’s kitchen is different. What tastes one way to me could taste completely different for my husband. So having that realization, I felt that I not only had to create more, but I had to provide information to customers so they could feel more confident about utilizing these blends creatively.”

With each blend, HS Creations provides a pairing card to give cooks at home suggestions as to what the herb and spice blends would typically pair nicely with in terms of a whole meal, as well as sample recipes

HS Creations works hard to accommodate as many individual palettes as possible. It’s not lost on Joanne that food and cooking is a universal language among all cultures and diets, and that language should be enjoyed by everyone.

Cost-saving is also a huge focus of HS Creations. Buying herb and spice blends is an affordable way to take any straightforward meal, and make it fun and fresh without breaking the bank.

For example, one of their most popular blends is the “OPA! Greek Seasoning Blend,” which combines 13 herbs and spices to provide the authentic flavors of Greek cuisine. The beauty of “OPA!” and all the blends from HS Creations, is that they remove the need to go to the store and buy dozens of separate herbs and spices that a majority of will likely end up sitting in the pantry for months untouched. According to a cost-analysis from HS Creations, their OPA! Blend would save the average customer around $30 compared to buying all of the ingredients separately at the grocery store.

Joanne’s background in business and working in the corporate sphere makes her the perfect individual to be a part of running HS Creations.

“I always used to say I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, even working in the corporate world.

People who are hurting financially are often placed in a position where they can’t afford to buy dozens of ingredients and need to opt for easy, affordable meals. Others are either in college, living alone, or simply don’t have the space to accommodate a bunch of different herbs and spices. We want to provide a level of convenience, comfort, and joy to everyone who uses our blends.”

HS Creations also makes it a priority to deliver as little waste as possible with their products. All of their products and everything involved in their packaging is recyclable.

This is why it was integral for her to provide a vast amount of information on the HS Creations website, so customers can experience that same knowledge. In addition to nutritional information, HS Creations also offers recipes that their blends help bring to life. The recipes are healthy, and also work to inspire customers to experiment in the kitchen.

“We want to make people aware of what’s really in their herbs and spices. From the dawn of HS Creations I was seeking some kind of expansion that went beyond just our products. I wanted to be a one-stop shop, a resource that people can consistently utilize. Consumers deserve to be as informed as possible so they can feel good about what they’re deciding to put into their body.”

Joanne’s journey into creating this business can resonate with a lot of us. Sometimes life forces us into situations where we must adapt and shift our lifestyle to overcome. With all of us being stuck at home in 2020, we had to adjust and learn new things about ourselves, and one of the biggest focuses of that is how we take care of ourselves, including what we put into our bodies. Joanne took this as an opportunity to make something we do every day, eating, enjoyable again while keeping customers fully educated.

HS Creations offers full transparency in terms of what’s actually in each blend to accommodate for anyone with a dietary restriction or allergy:

“At HS Creations, we make every effort to identify and disclose all ingredients that may cause allergic reactions for those with food allergies. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of production while being mindful of the severity of food allergies. Our ingredient labels are as accurate as possible, clearly identifying items that contain possible allergens.

The Blends we make today are pure organic, healthy, and natural. What you see, is what you get, no hidden additives. The Blends I create save space, money, and time. There is something for everyone’s taste. You don’t need to be a ‘cook’ to enjoy these gourmet flavors. We even use these Blends on our frozen meals! I believe that everyone deserves to have gourmet flavor no matter what, it just brightens people’s day!”

HS Creations sources its natural ingredients used in its organic herbs and spices from two distributors in New York and Oregon. Both locations are certified organic distributors of herbs and spices. “Choosing the right distributors was obviously essential when creating this business. If I couldn’t put my trust in them and vice versa, then I don’t want their product on my table,” Joanne expressed.

“I always say I don’t know if I found HS Creations or if it found me, but I believe everything happens for a reason. It all occurred very naturally and organically, no pun intended.”

Joanne’s journey and HS Creations should inspire us all to take a moment to reflect. Reflect on our life and what brings us joy. We all deserve the chance to take a minute and think about how we can continuously improve ourselves without having to sacrifice what makes us happy. Incorporating these organic herbs and spices is a simple way of adjusting a piece of our daily routine to benefit our overall well being.

“There is not one blend that I don’t personally approve of. If I don’t think it’ll add a punch of flavor to a meal, or don’t see a potential for diversity in the meals it can be used for, it won’t be sold. When I get an idea for a new blend, I research about three to four different recipes online to study and imagine coming to fruition with that combination of organic herbs and spices. Through this process, I’m able to ensure all of our blends can be used vastly, and easily.

Food is passion, food is personal, and food talks to people. I want to bring that energy to people’s dinner tables, the sandwiches they eat at work, the soups they have when they’re sick, or the pizza rolls they enjoy after a long day. We all deserve that chance, and I’m so happy to give that to people with HS Creations,” Joanne concluded.

In addition to providing nutritional information and recipes to her customers, Joanne also runs a blog through HS Creations to continue to inspire others to branch out with their meals. HS Creations also has its own line of accessories that can be used with the herbs and spice blends from HS Creations.
