Study Finds Urban Raccoons Showing Early Signs of Domestication

Humanity’s push into wild spaces may be doing more than reshaping landscapes; it might be shaping the evolution of the animals living alongside us.

A new study from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) suggests that raccoons, long notorious for raiding dumpsters and scampering through back-alley shadows, are developing traits typically associated with domesticated animals.

The project, published in Frontiers of Zoology, began when UALR researchers noticed subtle anatomical differences in raccoons photographed around cities. To test whether these quirks were part of a larger pattern, the team analyzed nearly 20,000 images submitted by citizen scientists on iNaturalist.

A surprising trend emerged. Raccoons thriving in metropolitan areas had noticeably shorter snouts than raccoons living far from humans, a hallmark seen in several species that have begun the domestication journey.

The team believes the driving force is simple—access to unlimited leftovers and garbage.

“Trash is really the kickstarter,” said senior author Raffaela Lesch, an assistant professor of biology at UALR.

“Wherever humans go, there is trash. Animals love our trash. It’s an easy source of food. All they have to do is endure our presence, not be aggressive, and then they can feast on anything we throw away.”

In other words, the raccoons bold enough to rummage through urban waste are the ones that get rewarded, and their anatomy may be reflecting generations of that success.

Many people imagine domestication as something humans actively engineer—dogs from wolves, cows from wild aurochs, and so on. But the UALR team emphasizes that animals can self-domesticate simply by adapting to our behavior, our protection from predators, and especially our leftovers.

These pressures can trigger traits outlined in the Neural Crest Domestication Syndrome (NCDS), a hypothesis that links domestication to changes early in embryonic development. The result? Smaller skulls, altered pigmentation, shorter snouts, floppy ears, and other distinctive features allow animals to appear tamer.

The raccoons seem to be checking off at least one of those boxes.

“If you have an animal that lives close to humans, you have to be well-behaved enough. That selection pressure is quite intense.”

The research began as a hands-on learning experiment for 16 students in Lesch’s biometry class. She wanted them to experience real data collection rather than hypothetical case studies, a choice that proved wildly successful.

“The idea behind biometry, where students learn how to code and use statistics, is a class that is difficult to teach. I wanted to teach this class in a way that students would have their own data that they collect and analyze. The benefit is that I didn’t have to push students to complete the work. They were intrinsically motivated because they cared.”

Their enthusiasm paid off. The study was ultimately strong enough to land in a reputable, peer-reviewed journal and may kick off an entire line of research into urban-animal evolution. The 16 students were co-authors.

The team now hopes to expand their work to other city-dwelling mammals, such as armadillos and opossums, to see if similar patterns emerge across species. As cities continue to grow, these subtle changes in anatomy and temperament may become more common.

And raccoons, which are clever, fearless, and endlessly curious, could be the first to cross the threshold from backyard bandits to potential companions.

“It would be fitting and funny if our next domesticated species [were] raccoons. I feel like it would be funny if we called the domesticated version of the raccoon the trash panda.”
