Returning Gaza Flotilla Participants Report Mistreatment in Israeli Jails, Lawyers Cite Systemic Violations

An Italian activist detained after joining a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla has accused Israeli authorities of subjecting him and other participants to “gratuitous cruelty and humiliation” while in custody — allegations that Israel has strongly denied.

Lorenzo D’Agostino, one of hundreds of activists arrested when Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla last week, said in an interview with CNN that detainees were forced to kneel or sit for hours on concrete in front of Israeli flags, kept in cold temperatures with little clothing, and had their belongings seized or destroyed. He described guards binding his wrists so tightly that circulation was nearly cut off.

“We were shocked by the level of humiliation and gratuitous cruelty that these people used on us. The way we were treated was pushing the mistreatment and the humiliation to the limit that they could afford.”

He added that because he is Italian, from a country allied with Israel, the guards “knew they couldn’t harm us physically” without drawing backlash.

“People coming from countries that are not allied (with Israel) were harmed physically. I was sharing my cell with a Turkish citizen (another activist) whose arm was broken, and he was left without painkillers for two days.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry has rejected the allegations as “brazen lies,” asserting that “all the detainees’ legal rights are fully upheld.” The ministry called the flotilla a “pre-planned PR stunt” and said claims of abuse were part of a “fake news campaign.”

The Global Sumud Flotilla, a coalition of more than 40 vessels carrying food, water, and medical supplies toward Gaza, set sail in late August and early September in an effort to break the years-long blockade of the Palestinian territory. Israel, which maintains that the blockade is legal under international law, has described the flotilla as a provocation intended to delegitimize its security measures.

Among the roughly 450 people detained was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who, according to D’Agostino and legal representatives, was also subjected to degrading treatment. D’Agostino said Thunberg was forced to kneel on concrete in front of an Israeli flag and surrounded by others as police took photos of her.

Lubna Tuma, an attorney with the Adalah Legal Centre representing the detainees, said Thunberg and another activist were separated from the group and photographed with the flag “as an act of humiliation.”

Thunberg was deported on Monday along with 170 others. Speaking at Athens International Airport after her release, she said she could “talk for a very, very long time about our mistreatment and abuses in our imprisonment,” but added that “this is not the story.”

“What happened here is that Israel, while continuing to escalate their genocide and mass destruction, once again violated international law by preventing humanitarian aid from reaching people who are being starved.”

Israel has repeatedly maintained that its military operations in Gaza are conducted in accordance with international law and denies accusations of genocide.

D’Agostino also alleged that while he was in detention, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir visited the flotilla participants and called them “terrorists” and “supporters of killers.” He said guards appeared to become “especially cruel” in Ben Gvir’s presence, tightening his restraints to the point where blood flow to his hands nearly stopped.

Later that day, Ben Gvir publicly criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to deport the activists, calling it “fundamentally mistaken.” “I believe they must be kept here in an Israeli prison for several months so they can breathe the air of the terrorists’ wing,” Ben Gvir said in a post on X.

Other deported activists have shared similar accounts. Goretti Sarasibar told Reuters that detainees were shown videos of Hamas’s October 7 attacks and were denied food for an entire day. Dutch activist Marco Tesh described being unable to breathe after guards “put something to my face” while his hands were tied behind his back.

Another activist, Rafael Borrego, displayed deep handcuff marks on his wrists and said guards routinely stormed cells with guns and dogs.

“At any time that any of us called a police officer, we risked that seven or more fully armed people entered to our cell, as they did on mine, pointing us with weapons at our heads, with dogs ready to attack us, and being dragged to the floor. This happened on a daily basis.”

By Monday, most of the detained activists had been deported, but their accounts have drawn concern from human rights advocates and governments whose citizens took part in the flotilla. Israel has continued to deny all accusations of mistreatment, reiterating that detainees’ rights were protected and dismissing their testimonies as more “fake news.”

Around the world, there have been widespread protests in response to the interception of the flotilla.

Elon Musk Downplays Hitler’s Role in the Holocaust, Blames Public Workers Instead

Early Friday morning, Elon Musk briefly shared and then quickly deleted a controversial post on X, which falsely argued that dictators like Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, and Mao Zedong were not directly responsible for millions of deaths, shifting the blame instead to their government employees.

The contentious post stated, “Stalin, Hitler, and Mao didn’t murder millions of people. Their public sector workers did.” Musk provided no commentary when sharing the message but swiftly removed it following widespread criticism from other users, who condemned it as historically inaccurate, antisemitic, and dismissive of atrocities.

Historians overwhelmingly agree that Stalin’s regime in the Soviet Union, Hitler’s Nazi government in Germany, and Mao’s rule in China were directly accountable for mass casualties, including the Holocaust, Stalin’s purges, and the devastation of Mao’s Cultural Revolution.

This incident is not the first time Musk has attracted controversy with his social media posts. Since acquiring X, formerly known as Twitter, Musk has dramatically loosened policies governing hate speech and misinformation, reinstating numerous previously banned accounts—including that of former President Trump.

In 2023, Musk shared another antisemitic post on X, which he claimed represented “the actual truth” about Jewish people, leading to significant backlash and advertiser departures. The first part of the post read, “Jewish communities have been pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them.”

Following an assassination attempt on former President Trump last year, Musk also posted—and quickly deleted—a provocative remark questioning why no similar attempts had occurred against President Biden or Vice President Harris.

Musk, who frequently leverages his platform to broadcast politically charged statements to over 219 million followers, has increasingly aligned himself with right-wing figures worldwide. He has publicly supported leaders such as Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, Javier Milei of Argentina, and India’s Narendra Modi—countries where Musk maintains significant business interests.

Most recently, Musk minimized the severity and legacy of the Holocaust during an online event supporting Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), a party linked to neo-Nazi affiliations, by asserting, “Children should not feel guilty for the sins of their parents—or even their great-grandparents.”

His repeated flirtations with Nazi symbolism and historical revisionism remain puzzling, especially considering his public visit to Israel and the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp just over a year ago. Holocaust survivor Gidon Lev, who accompanied Musk on that visit, later expressed disappointment, noting Musk’s apparent lack of genuine engagement and describing his participation as merely a “photo op.”

“I was not impressed because he didn’t make the least attempt to make any personal connections. So, you know, like, ‘Where were you, Gidon? What happened to your father?’ There was nothing. I was there as a decoration. It was the AJE, the Jewish Association, who wanted a Holocaust survivor to be photographed together with Elon Musk. So, I went along. I was sort of a prop, but it was freezing cold, and it was hard. And he was not connected.”

Musk’s involvement with public sector employees has intensified lately as part of his advisory role to President Trump on government efficiency and spending reforms. He’s openly criticized federal workers, accusing them of hiding fraud and urging them to resign. Musk’s comments triggered immediate outrage among public-sector worker unions and advocates.

Lee Saunders, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the largest trade union for public sector employees in the U.S., strongly denounced Musk’s post in a statement. 

“America’s public service workers – our nurses, teachers, firefighters, librarians – chose making our communities safe, healthy and strong over getting rich. They are not, as the world’s richest man implies, genocidal murderers. Elon Musk and the billionaires in this administration have no idea what real people go through every day. That’s why he’s so willing to take a chainsaw to people’s jobs, Medicaid, Social Security and Medicare.”

Despite deleting the controversial post, Musk continued responding to critics on X throughout Friday, defending himself against antisemitism allegations and suggesting that his critics were the actual fascists.

“Look at what they did to President @realDonaldTrump. He was loved by Democrats until he ran for president. Now they call him Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, etc. and try to kill him.”

Musk’s attempts to distance himself from accusations of supporting Nazi ideologies have been met with skepticism. In January, Musk attracted additional controversy after being seen making a gesture similar to the Roman salute onstage, famously associated with Nazi Germany.

During a recent podcast interview with Joe Rogan, Musk argued that one can’t be labeled a Nazi without actively “committing genocide” or “invading Poland”—an oversimplification that overlooks contemporary neo-Nazis who openly adopt Nazi beliefs without perpetrating such acts.

Comments such as these have intensified criticism against Musk and sparked boycott campaigns targeting his company, Tesla. Activists, who refer to Tesla vehicles as “swasticars,” have held peaceful protests outside dealerships. However, some dealerships have faced more aggressive actions, including vandalism and suspected arson incidents, with swastikas spray-painted on cars and property.

New Report Details Gruesome Russian War Crimes In Ukraine

Human Rights Watch released a new report detailing a multitude of war crimes committed by Russia within the first weeks of its invasion of Ukraine. The report was published Sunday, and cited the US accusing Russia of war crimes, and Kyiv accusing Moscow of genocide. 

Human Right Watch is a non-governmental organization known for providing updates, resources, and publicity for human rights violations throughout the world. The report detailed instances of war crimes between February 27th and March 14th; including repeated cases of rape, summary execution, unlawful violence, and general threats against innocent citizens. 

10 individuals provided personal accounts of what it’s like to be living in Ukraine territories that have been overtaken by Russia. One witness told the Human Rights Watch that Russian forces in Bucha forced five residents to kneel on the side of the road before shooting them each in the back of the head.

Another witness described how she was the victim of rape by a Russian soldier who raped her multiple times in a school in Kharkiv, where she was seeking shelter with her family. She claimed that the man cut her face, neck, and hair with a knife as well. 

“The incidents cited amount to unspeakable, deliberate cruelty and violence against Ukrainian civilians,” said Hugh Williamson, the Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

Last month, the Biden administration determined that Russian forces have committed multiple war crimes in Ukraine, and labeled president Vladimir Putin as a war criminal. Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky also accused Russia of Genocide on Sunday. 

“Indeed, this is genocide. The elimination of the whole nation and the people. We are the citizens of Ukraine. We have more than 100 nationalities. This is about the destruction and extermination of all these nationalities.”

“We are the citizens of Ukraine and we don’t want to be subdued by the policy of the Russian Federation. This is the reason we are being destroyed and exterminated, and this is happening in the Europe of the 21st century. So this is the torture of the whole nation,” Zelensky added.

This Sunday images surfaced online of the violence occurring in Bucha specifically. Images of bodies on the street caused an uproar online, including one image of a person who was tied up with their arms behind their back before they were killed. 

The Russian defense ministry has casually dismissed these images as “fakes staged by the Kiev regime for the Western media.” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called the images “horrific.”

“It’s absolutely unacceptable that civilians are targeted and killed. And it just underlines the importance that this war must end. And that is President Putin’s responsibility, to stop the war.”

Russia has pulled its troops from cities and towns near Kyiv, and it’s believed the nation will be repositioning its invasion to focus on eastern Ukraine.
