Paul McCartney Joins Artists Protesting AI By Releasing Songs That Are Completely Silent

Paul McCartney has released his first recording in five years. This single, however, is a part of a larger protest from UK artists fighting against the use of artificial intelligence in the music industry and using real artists’ voices and likeness to train the bots. 

The former Beatle will be releasing a track of almost complete silence to protest copyright theft. Instead of melodies and lyrics, there is only the sounds of a quiet hiss and odd clatter, according to reports.

The track is suggesting that if AI companies are going to exploit the intellectual property of musicians in order to train their generative AI models, the entire creative entity of the music industry becomes essentially useless with original artists losing opportunities and thus, being silenced. 

McCartney is currently touring in North America, and has added the new silent track to the B-side of an LP called ‘Is This What We Want?’

The LP is filled with other silent recordings and will be pressed on vinyl and released later this month. 

This LP project is McCartney’s contribution to an overall campaign from musicians and artists in the UK urging their government to pass regulations that will stop technology companies from training their AI models without approvals or paying royalties to the artists. 

McCartney’s album track listing spells out: “The British government must not legalize music theft to benefit AI companies.”

Ed Newton-Rex, composer and campaigner for copyright fairness, vocalized his support for the protest album as well. 

“I am very concerned the government is paying more attention to US tech companies’ interests rather than British creatives’ interests.”

Sam Fender, Kate Bush, Hans Zimmer, and the Pet Shop Boys are among the other artists that are supporting the campaign.

The newest track from McCartney is entitled (bonus track) and begins with 55 seconds of tape hiss before 15 seconds of indeterminate clattering that teases the possibility of a build up to something, but instead settles into another 80 seconds of “rustle-punctuated hiss and concluding with a slow and poignant fadeout,” the Guardian reports.  

McCartney has been a vocal advocate leading the musicians and artists of Britain in protesting this AI use. 

“We[’ve] got to be careful about it (AI) because it could just take over and we don’t want that to happen, particularly for the young composers and writers [for] who, it may be the only way they[’re] gonna make a career,” McCartney said. 

“If AI wipes that out, that would be a very sad thing indeed.”

Kate Bush is another notable advocate for the regulation of AI training and copyright frustrations, who’s also been involved in the protest album. “In the music of the future, will our voices go unheard?” 

Composer Max Richter said: “The government’s proposals would impoverish creators, favouring those automating creativity over the people who compose our music, write our literature, paint our art.”

A government spokesperson stated that it’s putting the interests of UK citizens and businesses first when responding to McCartney’s advocacy and protest project. 

Responding to McCartney’s intervention, a government spokesperson said it put the interests of the UK’s citizens and businesses first.

“We’ve always been clear on the need to work with both the creative industries and AI sector to drive AI innovation and ensure robust protections for creators,” the spokesperson said.

“We are bringing together both British and global companies, alongside voices beyond the AI and creative sectors, to ensure we can capture the broadest possible range of expert views as we consider next steps.”

Ringo Starr Stated Barry Keoghan Is Set To Play Him In New Beatles Biopic Films

According to Ringo Starr himself, Barry Keoghan is set to star as the famous drummer in Sam Mendes’s new set of biopics about the Beatles.

Starr was recently interviewed by Entertainment Tonight where he confirmed that the Oscar-nominated star of Saltburn will be playing him in Sam Mendes’s new set of films about the Beatles. 

“I think it’s great. I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many,” Starr said when he was asked about Keoghan’s alleged casting. 

Sam Mendes’s project is set to be four films, each of which will be from the perspective of each band member. 

“I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,” Mendes said.

The project received the life and music rights from Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison.

“Nothing is off limits and no sense of the band wanting him [Sam] to tell a particular ‘authorized’ version of their rise to success,” said producer Pippa Harrison. 

Keoghan is one of Hollywood’s most talked about actors currently after his acclaimed performances in The Killing of a Sacred Deer and American Animals, as well as an Oscar-nominated performance in The Banshees of Inisherin. 

He also starred in the hit diverse thriller Saltburn and is set to star in psychological thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow with singer The Weeknd.

Paul Mescal is another rumored actor for the series of biopics as Paul McCartney. “I would love to be involved, but there’s nothing set in stone,” Mescal recently told GQ.

Actor Harris Dickinson is rumored to be in talks to be playing John Lennon. “There’s nothing I can say about that. It might not be true, it might be, I don’t know … there’s a speculation culture,” he told Dazed. 

The films are all set to be released in 2027.

The Beatles Next Generation: John Lennon And Paul McCartney’s Sons Collaborate On New Song

The songwriting stylings of John Lennon and Paul McCartney defined a whole generation of music, and is one of the reasons The Beatles became such an iconic band in the history of music. Now, the sons of Lennon and McCartney, Sean Ono and James, have teamed up to bring back the Lennon-McCartney songwriting credit in a new song called “Primrose Hill.”

“Primrose Hill” is a single by James McCartney and was co-written by Sean Ono Lennon. The Guardian described the song as an “acoustic ballad with a shuffling backbeat and ruminative guitar soloing.”

“I had a vision as a child in Scotland, on what was a lovely summer’s day. Letting go, I saw my true love and savior in my mind’s eye. Primrose Hill is about getting the ball rolling with me & finding this person,” said James McCartney in an Instagram post.

Paul and Linda McCartney had James in 1977. He released two solo albums in 2013 and 2016, and stated recently that he was now “really getting the ball rolling” and he was “excited to continue to share music.”

Paul and James McCartney have previously co-written songs together, and James played with his father on his albums such as Flaming Pie in 1997. 

In a 2013 interview with the Daily Mail, James said “It’s hard to live up to the Beatles.”

“When Wings toured they got slated. Even Dad found it hard living up to the Beatles. I started out playing under an alias because I wanted to start quietly. I had to serve my time as a musician and wait until I had a good body of songs and for a time when both myself and my music were ready. I don’t want to sit around. I want to earn my own living,” he said.

Sean Ono Lennon has also had his own musical career. In his early life he appeared on his mother’s, Yoko Ono, albums, and eventually joined the alt-rock band Cibo Matto. The other members of Cibo Matto and Zak Starkey, the son of Ringo Starr, backed up Ono Lennon on his debut album Into the Sun, in 1998.

The Beatles as an entity continue to be a major part of the music industry and where it’s at today. Additionally, new projects about The Beatles are still in the works. What is being referred to as the final new Beatles song, “Now & Then,” was released in the fall. 

Peter Jackson also directed and released the three-part documentary “Get Back,” and a reissue of the 1970 film “Let It Be” will air on Disney + in May. 

“I’m absolutely thrilled that … Let It Be has been restored and is finally being rereleased after being unavailable for decades. I’ve always thought that Let It Be is needed to complete the Get Back story,”  Jackson said.

Four Films About Each Member Of The Beatles Are Coming From Director Sam Mendes

Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes has announced that he will be making four separate fiction films about one of the most famous bands in music history, The Beatles.

Each film will cover the story of one of the members of the band, meaning John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison will have their own films. 

The project has received the blessing of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as the families of both John Lennon and George Harrison.

This officially marks the first time that the remaining members of The Beatles, Lennon and Harrison’s families, and Apple (who owns the rights to the band’s music), have agreed to give the members life stories and their music rights over for a scripted film.

Mendes revealed that all four films will be released in 2027, and will tell stories that are interconnected. Each movie will be told from the perspective of the given band member. 

“I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies.”

Pippa Harris is Mendes’ producer, and explained to Deadline Magazine that the director initially had this idea a year ago: 

“It’s a testament to his creative brilliance and powers of persuasion that Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sean Lennon and Olivia Harrison responded with such warmth and enthusiasm as soon as he spoke with them,” she stated. 

“What is truly exciting is for Sam to have the freedom to delve into the lives of each of the Beatles, with nothing off limits and no sense of the band wanting him to tell a particular ‘authorized’ version of their rise to success.”

Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman discussed how when it comes to movies today, directors need large scale ideas, which is exactly what he believes Mendes is doing. 

“Theatrical movie events today must be culturally seismic. Sam’s daring, large-scale idea is that and then some. Pairing his premiere film-making team, with the music and the stories of four young men who changed the world, will rock audiences all over the globe. We are deeply grateful to all parties and look forward to breaking some rules with Sam’s uniquely artistic vision,” Robinson stated. 

Mendes’ debut film, ‘American Beauty’, won five Oscars in 2000. The two James Bond films he directed, ‘Skyfall’ (2012) and ‘Spectre’ (2015), are still the highest grossing films in the franchise. 

‘1917,’ his single-shot war film won three out of the 10 Oscars it was nominated for. 

While there have been more than 15 biopics on The Beatles, both TV and movie, this fresh approach with approval from all four members’ respective parties will be a fresh take on one of the world’s most famous bands.

Paul McCartney Announces He Will Be Publishing A 900-Page Lyrical Autobiography

Paul McCartney is set to publish ‘The Lyrics,’ a major deep dive into the performer’s life based on actual conversations he had with prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon. Publisher Allen Lane claims that it will be “as close to an autobiography as Paul may ever come.”

‘The Lyrics’ will be a two-volume, 900-page “self-portrait in 154 songs,” and will be released on November 2nd of this year. Allen Lane claims that it will be “a kaleidoscopic rather than chronological account of McCartney’s life, and will cover the musician’s earliest boyhood compositions – he wrote his first song at 14 – through the Beatles catalog to Wings, solo albums and his present life. The book will cover the circumstances in which they were written, the people and places that inspired them, and what McCartney thinks of them now.”

“Some people, when they get to a certain age, like to go to a diary to recall day-to-day events from the past, but I have no such notebooks. What I do have are my songs, hundreds of them, which I’ve learned serve much the same purpose. And these songs span my entire life.”

McCartney went on to explain that “more often than I can count I’ve been asked if I would write an autobiography, but the time has never been right. The one thing I’ve always managed to do, whether at home or on the road, is to write new songs.”

Muldoon is a Pulitzer prize-winning poet from Ireland who edited the book. The book itself is based on conversations that he and McCartney had throughout the past few years. 

“Sir Paul and I met regularly over a period of five years for two or three hour sessions in which we talked in a very intensive way about the background to a half dozen songs. In a strange way, our process mimicked the afternoon sessions he had with John Lennon when they wrote for the Beatles. We were determined never to leave the room without something interesting,” Muldoon explained.

Muldoon said that he was “struck again and again by what you might term Paul McCartney’s ‘scholarly’ disposition during the process. He’s one of the most buoyant, upbeat people I know, but his general demeanor shouldn’t suggest that he’s anything but a deep thinker. He looks long and hard into every aspect of life and I believe readers, old and new, will be struck by a book that will show that side of him. He’s going to come out of this book as a major literary figure.”

“His insights into his artistic process confirm a notion at which we had but guessed: that Paul McCartney is a major literary figure who draws upon, and extends, the long tradition of poetry in English.”

The two-volumes will also include material from McCartney’s personal archive that have never been shared publicly before. The material will include drafted songs, letters, and photographs from the beginning of his career. Lane claims that readers will be learning a much more intimate side to the legend, and have a real insight into his “creative process, how he works out certain melodies and the moments that inspired him the most throughout his career.”

“I hope what I wrote will show people something about my songs and my life which they haven’t seen before. I’ve tried to say something about how the music happens and what it means to me and I hope what it may mean to others too,” McCartney said.
