The United States is currently leading the world in developing artificial intelligence technology, according to a new index released by Stanford University.
The United States currently is leading the world in development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. A new index released by Stanford University measured the “vibrancy” of the AI industry across various places throughout the world.
While there’s no direct way to currently rank global AI leadership, the individuals behind the index looked at how much research and investment is happening around the world and how responsibly the technology is being pursued to prevent harm.
“The gap is actually widening between the U.S. and China,” said computer scientist Ray Perrault, director of the steering committee that runs Stanford’s AI Index.
“The U.S. is investing a lot more, at least at the level of firm creation and firm funding.”
The report was released on Thursday, and came from the California-based university’s Institute for Human-Centered AI. The Institute has ties to Silicon Valley’s tech industry, and the report was released as government AI officials from both the US and other allies met to discuss AI safety measures.
The US currently ranks number one on Stanford’s list. This isn’t that surprising, however, as the US has held that position since 2018 when it initially overtook China in AI development. Last year the US spent $67.2 billion in private AI investment compared to $7.8 billion in China. The US also leads in publishing responsible AI research.
The US is also home to Google and Meta, two major tech companies that have been leading the AI movement. OpenAI and Anthropic are two newer names in the AI field that have produced many models that have been utilized to further develop AI and its technologies. The US also has a number of AI-related laws, however there aren’t any broad regulations made.
The UN intellectual property agency stated earlier this year that China has requested more patents than any other country regarding generative AI.
“China’s focus on developing cutting-edge AI technologies and increasing its R&D investments has positioned it as a major AI powerhouse.”
The United Kingdom was ranked number 3 in AI development for their research and educational infrastructure with top computer science universities building a “skilled AI workforce,” according to Associated Press.
The UK is also where Google’s AI subsidiary DeepMind is located. The co-founder of DeepMind also recently won a Nobel prize. The UK has had more discussions of Ai in parliamentary proceedings than any other country, and it was the world’s first nation to host the international AI safety summit.
India was ranked right behind the UK as the nation has reported a “strong AI research community.” This community showed improvements in economic investments that are linked to AI.
The United Arab Emirates earned the number five spot, becoming one of the best locations for AI investments. For example, earlier this year Microsoft announced a $1.5 billion investment in the UAE tech firm G42.
France took sixth place in front of South Korea, Germany, Japan, and Singapore in that order.
