What To Know About Friday’s ‘Economic Blackout’
An organization known as The People’s Union USA has called for a national boycott known as an “economic boycott” for Friday, February 28th, urging Americans to not shop, especially at major brands and corporations, for 24 hours.
The movement itself began by John Schwarz, who announced the creation of The People’s Union USA on February 3rd, and followed the video up the next day with the call for a “day of economic resistance” as a means of showing the government that “the people have the power.” Schwarz acknowledged that the group is not affiliated with any political party, and is more than anything “dedicated to economic resistance, government accountability, and corporate reform.”
“Our goal is to unite Americans against the corruption and greed that has kept us struggling for decades,” the union says on its website.
“For generations our families worked, sacrificed, and fought to build a better future, yet here we stand, still waiting. We the people will not wait any longer. We stand in solidarity to honor the past and carve a new path for the future,” the group said in a video.
Schwarz also emphasized that this movement was not specifically about Elon Musk, President Donald Trump, or any single individual, but instead is about the American government’s “system as a whole.”
One of the goals is to hold billionaires and elected officials accountable, stating that the focus is “systemic change, not political drama.”
The People’s Union USA said: “[There will be more boycotts] until corporations are held accountable, billionaires pay their fair share, and the working class finally gets the freedom we deserve.”
The boycott is currently underway and will last until midnight. The organization is encouraging Americans not to buy anything including gas, fast food, anything from major online/in-person retailers.
Another “economic blackout” is scheduled for March 28th, and will last for 24 hours.
